Hidden within the sprawling urban landscape of São Paulo lies a sleeping giant: the Estádio Olímpico da USP. Why a sleeping giant? Because this stadium, also known as the Estádio Armando de Salles Oliveira, or simply the Estádio da USP, boasts a rich history yet remains largely unknown. Nestled within the Cidade Universitária Armando de Salles Oliveira, in the Butantã district, the Estádio Olímpico was a dream envisioned in the 1960s. Architect Ícaro de Castro Mello designed a masterpiece. He envisioned a stadium not just for sport, but as a centerpiece of a larger complex. This complex would include tennis courts, football fields, a covered pool, a gymnasium, and student housing.

The stadium’s design echoes the form of an amphitheater, maximizing both sunlight and visibility for spectators. Its brutalist architecture, a hallmark of São Paulo’s architectural scene in the 60s, is evident in the exposed concrete and uniquely shaped pillars. The Estádio Olímpico was designed to hold 30,000 spectators across two levels. It featured a 400m athletics track and a football field. The track’s design, with its three curvature radii, required a greater distance between the field and the stands. Underneath the stands were changing rooms and support areas. High above the field, press boxes and VIP seating offered panoramic views.

The Estádio Olímpico officially opened in 1976. It quickly became a hub for university training and smaller competitions. At the time of its inauguration, it was São Paulo’s third-largest football stadium, after Morumbi and Pacaembu. Even today, it still ranks as the fifth largest. The stadium hosted the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in 1988. The final match, held on January 24th, saw Nacional-SP defeat América-SP 3-0. Interestingly, this was the last official game played at the Estádio Olímpico. Even world-renowned players graced its field. Italian striker Paolo Rossi, famous for his hat-trick against Brazil in the 1982 World Cup, played a match here between Italy and Uruguay.

Today, the Estádio Olímpico stands silent, a testament to a vibrant past. It waits for a new chapter, a reawakening that could once again bring the roar of the crowd and the thrill of competition back to its hallowed grounds.
