Mosel wine. This is what Olewig is known for. Olewig is a special part of Trier. It is more than just a village. It is a place where wine and history come together.

Let’s take a stroll through Olewig. Imagine vineyards covering the hills around us. These vineyards are not new. They have been here since Roman times. Trier has always been a center for wine. Olewig is a key part of this tradition.

We are just a short drive from Trier’s city center. Yet, here in Olewig, it feels like another world. The hills provide a perfect spot for vineyards. The Oberbillig family has been making wine here for five generations.

Sebastian Oberbillig is now in charge. He studied wine-making. He worked in Australia, New Zealand and other parts of Germany. Now, he brings his knowledge back to his family’s winery. His father, Albert, still helps. He mainly handles admin, bottling and labeling.

The winery has grown. It once had 3.5 hectares of vines. Now, it has 11.5 hectares. These vines grow in famous locations. One of them is Deutschherrenkopfchen. It was once called Olewiger Vollmuhle. People thought it was too hard to work.

Sebastian saw its potential. In 2007, he took over the vineyard. He cleared the land. He improved the soil. He used compost and straw. Then, he planted old Riesling grapes. He knew this place could produce great wine.

Trier includes four villages where vines still grow. Olewig is one of them. The others are St. Matthias-Feyen, Kruez and Pallien. Wine has shaped Trier’s culture and economy. Poets have praised Trier’s beauty. Even the Carmina Burana mentions Trier’s love for vines and wines.

I once walked from the Mosel River to Olewig. I passed through the wine appreciation path. This path leads through Roman ruins and vineyards. It ends here in Olewig. Along the way, signs tell about wine history and production.

The path is about 1500 meters long. It shows the open fields of the Trier wine district. The signs explain different aspects of vineyards and grapes. The area has 373 hectares of vines. About 100 families work full-time as vintners. The main grapes are Riesling, Rivaner, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The slopes here are steep. Only special tractors can climb them. These tractors help to maintain the vineyards. They ensure the grapes get the best care.

The Olewiger Weinfest is a yearly event. It happens in Olewig. It lasts for three days. There is wine tasting. There is live music. There are food stalls. It is a celebration of wine and community.

So, as we stand here in Olewig, remember its wine tradition. Think of the families who have worked these lands. Consider the history that surrounds us. Olewig is more than a village. It is a testament to Trier’s rich wine culture.
