Beneath the red, white, and blue, lies a story of growth. Old Mill High School in Millersville Maryland opened its doors in 1975. It eased the overcrowding at Arundel and Severna Park High Schools.
Old Mill High School’s story began with a unique design. Some classrooms were built without walls or ceilings. Later walls were installed to provide proper learning spaces.
Today Old Mill High School is an important part of its community. It is located at 600 Patriot Lane. The school serves students in grades 9 through 12. Christian Thomas is the current principal.
Old Mill High School is more than just classrooms. It is one of three IB World Schools in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. The mascot is fittingly the Patriot.
In 2024 half the student population went to the new Severn Run High School. Old Mill High School also houses Old Mill Middle School North. This creates a unique educational environment.
The Old Mill feeder covers the southern half of Glen Burnie. Its cluster school is Old Mill Middle South. Old Mill High School is known for its diversity.
The student body is racially and socio-economically diverse. As of 2024 the racial makeup was diverse. It includes White, African American, Hispanic and Asian students.
Academically Old Mill High School strives for excellence. It is a public magnet school with over 2400 students. The student-teacher ratio is 17 to 1.
Old Mill High School test scores have fluctuated over the years. In 2024, the average test score was 39.7%. The school ranks 90th out of 146 schools in Maryland.
Since 2005 Old Mill High School has been an IB World School. It offers the IB Diploma Programme. Students can also participate in the Extended Learning Program known as Pre-IB.
Old Mill High School offers a wide array of extracurricular activities. Students can join clubs. These include the Asian American Heritage Club and the Chess Club. There is also a Dance Company.
Other options include Future Business Leaders of America and the Jazz Band. Students can also participate in Model United Nations. There is something for everyone.
Notable alumni have walked the halls of Old Mill High School. Kevin Barnes played American football. Josh Hader plays baseball. Jeong H. Kim founded Yurie Systems and became president of Bell Labs. Lester Speight played football and became a wrestler and actor.
