OCT Contemporary Art Terminal

In 2005, a pioneering contemporary art institution emerged in Shenzhen’s OCT Loft. This institution, the OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT), has become a significant hub for contemporary art in China. OCAT Shenzhen serves as the headquarters of the OCAT Museums group. It’s more than just a museum. It’s a dynamic space dedicated to exhibitions, research, and theoretical exploration of contemporary art. OCAT’s programs delve into individual artists’ works through surveys, research, publications, and exhibitions. They also curate research-based thematic exhibitions. Beyond exhibitions, OCAT hosts annual programs like OCAT Performs and OCAT Screens. These programs showcase performing practices, theoretical discussions, and film screenings. They explore art, dance, theater, documentary, video art, and film. These diverse programs enrich the art scene and foster dialogue among artists and thinkers. OCAT Shenzhen also houses a library, art salon, and children’s art education center. The building itself is a work of art. Originally a two-floor factory building designed for disk production, it was transformed into the OCAT-B10 in 2022. This renovation involved a fascinating journey. The project faced challenges like program adjustments, lengthy approvals, and leadership changes. Despite financial constraints, the vision was finally realized after fifteen years. The architects cleverly retained the original building volume and main structure. They inserted new spaces and added revolving staircases. This design guides visitors through a unique exhibition experience. The exhibition halls are designed for flexibility. Movable doors and walls create diverse exhibition paths. This leads to unexpected encounters with art. The rooftop is an open-air exhibition space. It offers breathtaking views of distant mountains and nearby trees. The rooftop provides an escape from the everyday. It’s a place for informal gatherings and unexpected encounters with art installations. OCAT Shenzhen’s commitment to contemporary art is evident in its diverse programs and its unique building.
