Once a gargantuan building site, now Obz Square stands tall. This impressive structure is more than just a building. It is a UCT self-catering residence.

Obz Square’s story began with a vision. Developers Cape Living Development brought UCT’s idea to life. The total cost was a staggering R485 million. Obz Square opened its doors on 1 January 2012.

It quickly became the largest UCT residence. It more than doubled the size of Graça Machel residence. Obz Square boasts 900 en-suite bedrooms and shared kitchenettes. Retail space on the ground floor adds to its appeal. Retailers were carefully selected.

UCT recognized the potential traffic impact. They widened and realigned Main Road. This addressed a constrained section prone to accidents. Parking is available in the basement for residents and customers.

Security is a top priority at Obz Square. There is 24-hour security camera surveillance. Access control and CPS patrols ensure safety.

The speedy construction was remarkable. Prefabricated concrete structures played a key role. Staircases and bathroom pods were assembled off-site. These components were then lifted and integrated into the building. It was like giant Lego blocks fitting perfectly.

Obz Square has over 880 rooms. Understandably, neighbors had questions during construction. UCT hosted a Community Information Day. Observatory residents toured the building. They voiced their concerns and suggestions.

The university addressed concerns about parking for visitors. Policies were put in place to prevent doubling-up or squatting. Measures were established for misbehaving students.

UCT intended to create a living learning environment at Obz Square. The university called on residents to be partners in the project. UCT wants to be good neighbors.

Obz Square isn’t just a residence, but a community hub. It offers modern amenities. These include Italian kitchens, balconies, and courtyards. Each apartment has an open-plan kitchen and lounge. Rooms are furnished with double beds and study areas. Free high-speed fiber and laundry facilities are also available.

Obz Square is conveniently located. It is near AFDA, UCT Medical School, and Varsity College. Local shops and the Jammie Shuttle stop are within walking distance.

Obz Square stands as a testament to modern construction and community engagement. It provides a secure and vibrant living space for students. The building contributes to the Observatory area’s upliftment. So, next time you pass Obz Square, remember its story. It is a story of innovation, collaboration, and community.
