High above Trieste stands the Obelisco di Opicina. Its imposing form silhouetted against the sky. This isn’t just any monument. This obelisk whispers stories of emperors and ambitious road-building projects.

The Obelisco di Opicina commemorates the opening of the new road to Opicina in 1830. Before this road Trieste and Opicina were not easily connected. Travelers relied on a much older less convenient route. This new road however was a game changer for trade and commerce. The obelisk celebrates this important improvement. It also marks Emperor Francis I’s contribution to the region’s progress.

Construction began much earlier in 1834. Biagio Valle a young architecture student at the time designed it. However delays plagued the project. A debate raged over its exact location. Then there was an accident. The cart carrying the obelisk from the Monrupino quarry suffered damage. Even the hoist used to raise it broke.

Finally on March 30 1839 the construction was finished. There was no grand official ceremony. Still the obelisk stands tall a testament to perseverance. Its dedication inscription is a small masterpiece. It reads “Francis I pious and fortunate Augustus opened and built the road from Trieste to the summit of Ocra for the mutual benefit of Italy and Germany in 1830”. The back shows the monument was erected by the Trieste merchants. This obelisk isn’t just a stone. It is a visible sign of trade and progress. A symbol of an era.

The obelisk stands at 359 meters above sea level. Its location offers breathtaking panoramic views. It sits near the crossroads where the Napoleonic Road begins. This road now known as the Vicentina Road winds its way through the Karst landscape. The view from the obelisk is truly unforgettable. It is a perfect spot to soak in the beauty of Trieste. A fitting tribute to the vision and effort that brought it into being. Remember the Obelisco di Opicina next time you are here. It holds a special place in Trieste’s history.
