Construction began much earlier in 1834. Biagio Valle a young architecture student at the time designed it. However delays plagued the project. A debate raged over its exact location. Then there was an accident. The cart carrying the obelisk from the Monrupino quarry suffered damage. Even the hoist used to raise it broke.
Finally on March 30 1839 the construction was finished. There was no grand official ceremony. Still the obelisk stands tall a testament to perseverance. Its dedication inscription is a small masterpiece. It reads “Francis I pious and fortunate Augustus opened and built the road from Trieste to the summit of Ocra for the mutual benefit of Italy and Germany in 1830”.
