Ever wondered about the origins of Oatlands’ name? It’s a story woven into the very fabric of this Sydney suburb. Right here before us stands a testament to history. Oatlands didn’t spring up overnight. It has roots stretching back to Oatlands House. This grand residence was one of the first homes in the Parramatta district. Built in the 1830s by Percy Simpson it’s a beautiful story of early settlement.

Some say the name reflects Australia’s first oat harvest. But that’s not quite true. The name more likely comes from Oatlands Park in England. It was near the lands of Lord Dundas. Dundas is the name of a neighbouring suburb. In 1840 James Bettington bought the land. He used it for sheep farming. Think of flocks grazing where now homes stand.

Today Oatlands House serves as a function centre. Its surrounding land forms the Oatlands Golf Course. It opened in 1931 a landmark for the community. The course has seen many famous players. Laura Davies Lydia Ko Caroline Hedwall and Joanna Klatten all won the New South Wales Women’s Open there. Brett Ogle even called it Australia’s best par 70 course. Even Peter Lonard a multiple Australian Open winner honed his skills here. He even served as the club professional.

Beyond the golf course Oatlands has a rich history. The Burnside area was once home to Burnside Homes children’s homes. Established in 1911 by Sir James Burns they provided care for many children. Although no longer used as children’s homes the area still houses Uniting Care Burnside. Burnside Public School also stands on land belonging to the trust. Now new housing developments such as Burnside Gardens Estate stand among the history.

Oatlands wasn’t always Oatlands. Before 1991 it was known as Dundas West. The Dundas West Post Office opened in 1967 and changed its name to Oatlands in 1993. Even the Wiggles filmed scenes for their movie The Wiggles Movie here in 1997.

So next time you stroll through Oatlands remember its layered history. From grand houses to sheep farms to a renowned golf course. It is a suburb rich in character and stories waiting to be discovered. Oatlands offers more than just pretty streets. It offers a journey through time a testament to the resilience and growth of Sydney.
