High above Liljeholmen, there is Nybohovsberget. This is not just any hill. It is a place filled with history and stunning views.
Nybohovsberget rises 58 meters above sea level. It sits south of Lake Trekanten. You will find it nestled between Liljeholmstorget, Essingeleden, and Hägerstensvägen-Södertäljevägen. You can reach the top via Nybohovsbacken from Liljeholmstorget. Another option is Nybohovsviadukten over Essingeleden from Aspudden.
Atop Nybohovsberget lies the residential area of Nybohov. Here, you will see high-rise buildings with 10 to 14 floors. There are also slab buildings with 3 to 5 floors. The Nybohov water reservoir sits at the highest point. It was originally built between 1900 and 1904. It was later rebuilt from 1959 to 1963.
Did you know that before the residential buildings, Nybohovsberget was a popular spot for motorcycle enthusiasts? The FMCK managed a workshop, a restaurant, and even a dance hall within the old military facilities.
But wait, there is more to Nybohovsberget than just motorcycles and water reservoirs. The funicular between Liljeholmen and Nybohov is a must-try. Since 1964, it has carried people through a rock tunnel. It climbs over 120 feet.
If you look closely, you might spot colorful children’s toys. These toys began appearing a few years ago. They decorate the tunnel at regular intervals. No one knows how they got there. It seems someone with a metro key is responsible.
In 2012, city officials wanted to remove the toys. They considered them a fire hazard. But the public protested. People had grown attached to the fuzzy companions. The cheery faces remain in the Nybohov Funicular today.
The buildings on Nybohovsberget were designed in the late 1950s. Bertil Ringqvist planned the new housing district for Svenska Bostäder. Construction took place between 1959 and 1964. The complex features a monumental scale and a pure sculptural expression. It represents the architectural style between the smaller-scale planning of the 1950s and the Million Program.
The district resembles an isolated mountain village surrounded by greenery. It includes three long wall-like buildings and eleven housing towers. There is also a school complex and the water reservoir. The architecture has clearly articulated volumes. The buildings are finished in uncolored plaster. A green, terraced landscape surrounds them. Rough in situ cast concrete retaining walls support the landscape.
Nybohov Studios is a proposed addition to the area. It features a slender housing tower on a larger parking plinth. The building replaces a ground-level parking lot. It sits on the edge of the forest. It offers extraordinary views over Stockholm.
