Deep within the Ma On Shan Country Park, nestled between Shatin and Sai Kung, lies Nui Po Shan. Nui Po Shan isn’t just any peak. It’s home to a rock formation so unique, it’s earned a rather cheeky nickname: the Penis Rock. Locals call it Joeng Jyun Sek, a more polite term, but the resemblance is undeniable. This geological marvel is the main attraction, drawing hikers from all over. The journey to Nui Po Shan begins at Tai Shui Hang MTR station. A 45-minute paved road leads to the Mui Fa Ancient Trail, passing farmlands and village houses. The trail itself is shaded and gentle, a pleasant trek through lush jungle and past refreshing waterfalls. However, the approach to the Penis Rock gets steep. Thankfully, ropes are in place to assist climbers. Reaching the iconic rock takes approximately 1.5 hours from the trailhead. The Phallic Rock, as it’s sometimes called, stands proudly in a picturesque setting, a perfect spot for a memorable photo. For those seeking a broader view, the summit of Nui Po Shan is a short 10-15 minute climb from the rock. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The descent, however, presents a different challenge. The path down to Mui Tsz Lam road is steep, sandy, and uneven. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. Remember to bring plenty of water, especially during hot weather. Two to three liters is a good starting point. A few snacks and UV protection, like a hat, sleeves, and quick-dry clothing are also advisable. The entire loop is about 8 kilometers and takes roughly 5 hours, including rest stops and photo opportunities. It’s considered an intermediate hike. Nui Po Shan’s Penis Rock is a truly unforgettable sight. It’s a testament to the power and artistry of nature. A hike to this iconic landmark is a must-do for any adventurous soul visiting Hong Kong.
