All aboard. Today, we’re diving into the heart of Australia’s rail heritage at the NSW Rail Museum. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a living, breathing testament to the power and glory of trains.

The NSW Rail Museum resides in the historic town of Thirlmere, in South West Sydney. Since 1962, it has preserved and showcased locomotives, passenger cars, and freight rolling stock. These were operated by the New South Wales Government Railways and private companies.

Step back in time. Walk the timeline of rail development. See the first steam engine. Discover how railways shaped NSW towns.

Don’t miss the Great Train Hall. It has an impressive collection of locomotives, carriages, and wagons. Each one has a unique story.

Imagine yourself inside the driver’s cab of a steam locomotive. Explore a historic mail van. Walk through a prison van. Admire the Governor-General’s carriage.

The Governor-General’s state carriage is a sight. It was built in 1901 at the Eveleigh Carriage Workshops. It hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York for the opening of Australia’s first parliament. The Prince of Wales rode in it in 1920. The Duke and Duchess of York used it in 1927. Even Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip rode it during their 1954 visit. Princess Marina rode it during her visit in 1964.

The NSW Rail Museum also operates heritage train rides. These run on the Picton–Mittagong railway line. The line opened in 1867 as part of the Main Southern Railway. A new alignment bypassed it in 1919. Regular services continued until the 1970s. The section between Picton and Buxton is still used for heritage train experiences.

The NSW Rail Museum is brought to you by Transport Heritage NSW. The NSW Government proudly funds it.

The museum has many locomotives. These include steam locomotives like the 102, 103, and 1301. Also, diesel locomotives like the 40 class and 44 class. There are electric locomotives like the 86 class.

Other exhibits include a van used by Arnott’s biscuit company and a collection of train tickets.

The museum opened at its current location on June 1, 1976. In 2009, a new roundhouse was opened to relocate the locomotive depot.

In March, the museum hosts the Thirlmere Festival of Steam each year. Also, Transport Heritage NSW operates mainline tours. These can be day trips or extended weekend tours.

The NSW Rail Museum has over 2,300 members. This includes over 400 active volunteers. It is accredited as a rail operator. This means it has access rights on the NSW main line rail network.

So, as you explore the NSW Rail Museum, remember you’re not just looking at old trains. You are experiencing the history, the innovation, and the stories of a nation built on rails. It’s a journey through time. It’s a celebration of engineering. It’s a testament to the enduring power of the railway.
