How many buildings in Warsaw can tell a story of survival against all odds? Right here stands the Nożyk Synagogue. It is a symbol of resilience. This is the only pre-war synagogue in Warsaw that survived the Nazi occupation.

The Nożyk Synagogue stands as a testament to Warsaw’s vibrant Jewish community. Before World War II, Warsaw was home to over 400 houses of prayer. The Jewish population was one of the largest in the world. Today, the Nożyk Synagogue is the only one still standing.

Zalman Nożyk, a successful Warsaw merchant, and his wife Rywka financed this temple. Construction took place between 1898 and 1902. The location was on Twarda Street near Grzybowski Square.

Karol Kozłowski designed the Nożyk Synagogue. He also designed the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra Hall. The synagogue’s facade showcases a neo-Romanticist style with neo-Byzantine elements. The building is rectangular. Its internal chamber is divided into three aisles. The Nożyk Synagogue officially opened on May 26, 1902.

In 1914, the Nożyks donated the synagogue to the Warsaw Jewish Commune. They requested yearly prayers in their name. The only condition was that it retain the name Nożyk.

During World War II, the Nożyk Synagogue faced immense challenges. In September 1939, an air raid damaged the synagogue. After 1941, the Nazis used the building as stables and a depot. This is why the Nożyk Synagogue survived. Other synagogues within the Ghetto were razed to the ground.

After the war, the Nożyk Synagogue was partially restored. It was returned to the Warsaw Jewish Commune. Reconstruction, however, did not begin immediately. The synagogue was completely rebuilt between 1977 and 1983. It reopened on April 18, 1983. A new wing was added to house the Jewish Commune. Several other Jewish organizations also found a home here.

Today, the Nożyk Synagogue is a place of worship and gathering. It is the center of Jewish life in Warsaw. In 2024, the synagogue was attacked with firebombs. Fortunately, there was minimal damage and no casualties.

The Nożyk Synagogue stands as a symbol of survival. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Jewish community in Warsaw. The Nożyk Synagogue is a reminder of the past. It is also a beacon of hope for the future.
