Picture this a quaint village nestled beside the Jizera River. This is Nový Vestec a place steeped in history and charm. Nový Vestec boasts a rich past its origins stretching back to 1777. This was not its first incarnation however. An earlier settlement existed centuries ago. Archeological findings hint at a village called Vesce that vanished in the 16th century. Nový Vestec rose from the ashes as it were a new beginning in the latter half of the 18th century.
Imagine the scene then. Fifteen houses line a single street. Each home had a small plot of land. Families supplemented their meager harvests with work in the vast Zelená Bouda forests. Life was hard yet Nový Vestec thrived. It slowly grew adding homes and expanding its reach. Post-World War I land reforms fueled further expansion. Smaller farms became more common. The land provided sustenance but the river proved unpredictable. The Jizera and Elbe rivers frequently flooded. These floods transformed the lowlands into rich meadows perfect for hay. Wealthier farmers from neighboring villages owned much of this fertile land.
The area also includes a significant protected natural area the Černý orel nature reserve. Designated in 1933 this reserve safeguards the natural forests of the Elbe and Jizera river terraces. Nový Vestec’s connection to these rivers runs deep. A wooden bridge spanning the Jizera River wasn’t built until 1936. Before then communication with the outside world was difficult during floods. This bridge was crucial for connecting the village to nearby settlements. It continues to serve its purpose connecting Nový Vestec to the world even after its reconstruction in 1994.
The village’s story is interwoven with notable individuals. Dr Josef Bohuslav Foerster a renowned composer spent his final years here. His legacy lives on in a bust in his former garden and a street named in his honor. The village also hosted other cultural figures. Emil Štolc a composer and conductor frequented Nový Vestec for summer retreats. Vadim Petrov a composer and teacher also spent many formative summers here.
Nový Vestec is more than just a village it’s a vibrant community with its own unique character. It showcases the resilience of its people their connection to the land and their enduring legacy.
