Beneath the vibrant tapestry of Prague’s sky rises the Nově spojení, a testament to modern engineering and a vital artery of the city’s railway network. Imagine standing here, at the foot of this impressive structure, as the rhythmic rumble of a train echoes through the tunnels. The Nově spojení, meaning “New Connection,” isn’t just a series of tunnels and bridges. It’s a symbol of connection, linking Prague’s central stations, Praha hlavní and Praha Masarykovo, to the outlying stations of Libeň, Vysočany, and Holešovice. Opened in 2010 after years of meticulous construction, the Nově spojení has transformed Prague’s railway landscape. Before its completion, many international trains, unable to access the city center from the north and east, terminated at Holešovice station. Now, thanks to this marvel of engineering, trains glide seamlessly into the heart of Prague.

The Nově spojení’s construction was a feat of engineering prowess, spearheaded by Skanska, Metrostav, and Subterra. A network of 28.5 kilometers of new track was laid, 16 kilometers of which are electrified. Think of the intricate web of 43 kilometers of fiber-optic cable, the nervous system of the signaling system, ensuring the smooth flow of trains. Picture the 267 separate structures, each playing a crucial role in this complex network. Even the overhead wires were thoughtfully designed, minimizing their visual impact on the cityscape.

One of the most striking features of the Nově spojení is the tunnel under Vítkov Hill. This 1.3-kilometer tunnel replaced an older, non-electrified single-track tunnel. The last train to traverse the old tunnel was a nostalgic steam service in December 2005, a poignant farewell to a bygone era. Today, in a beautiful repurposing, a cycle path follows the route of the old tunnel, a peaceful echo of the past. Emerging from the tunnel, the tracks sweep over the Sluncová viaduct, a graceful concrete structure that won the prestigious “Bridge Construction of the Year” award in 2008. This section alone, a symphony of concrete and steel, cost 262.3 million CZK. The entire project, a testament to Czech engineering, won the transport category of the “Construction of the Year” award in 2009.

The Nově spojení is more than just a functional railway line. It’s a thread woven into the fabric of Prague, connecting its past and present. As you stand here, beneath the arches of the viaduct, you are witness to a story of progress, innovation, and connection. The Nově spojení stands as a symbol of Prague’s dynamism, a city that embraces the future while honoring its rich history. This “New Connection” is not just about trains. It’s about connecting people, places, and possibilities.
