A beacon of faith and education. That’s the legacy of the Notre Dame Convent in Washington, D.C. Here, on North Capitol Street, stand two impressive brick structures, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. The Notre Dame Convent, nestled between K and Myrtle Streets, has witnessed the ebb and flow of the city’s history since its establishment. The Sisters first arrived in Washington D.C. at the behest of Ellen Ewing Sherman. Their initial focus was education, and they began their work at St. Aloysius school and the Industrial School.

The year 1920 marked a significant milestone. A new Academy of Notre Dame was constructed at the corner of K Street and North Capitol, dedicated on Thanksgiving Day by Cardinal Gibbons. Sadly, just three years later, the school was torn down. However, the convent remained, a steadfast presence in the community. The courtyard gates were always open, welcoming passersby to find solace in prayer at the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. This grotto, built in 1876 along with the original Academy, held a special place in the hearts of the Sisters and the community. Early annals whisper of miraculous cures attributed to prayers offered at this sacred spot.

The Notre Dame Convent wasn’t just a place of prayer; it was a vibrant center of learning. Photos reveal the 1910 graduating class of the Academy, hinting at different educational tracks. A commercial class is mentioned in 1912, and a post-graduate secretarial program in 1921. The convent itself underwent several transformations. Sister Superior Mary Appolonia spearheaded renovations in 1908, enhancing the living quarters for the growing community of Sisters. She also breathed new life into the chapel, adorning it with fresh tiles and frescoes. Before its renovation, the chapel, built around 1876, was a regular stop for Cardinal Gibbons, a close friend of the Sisters, who frequently celebrated Mass there. The convent building itself served a multifaceted purpose. Before the school was demolished, the first two floors housed the Sisters, while the top floor provided space for music rooms.

The story of the Notre Dame Convent is a story of dedication, resilience, and service. From its humble beginnings in a parish school to the grand Academy on K Street, the Sisters of Notre Dame left an indelible mark on Washington D.C. Their commitment to education, their open embrace of the community, and their unwavering faith transformed this corner of the city into a beacon of hope and inspiration. As you stand before these walls, imagine the generations of students who walked these halls, the prayers whispered in the grotto, and the unwavering spirit of the Sisters who made this place a home. The Notre Dame Convent stands as a silent witness to their legacy, a reminder of the power of faith and education to transform lives.
