Norwood School

Founded in 1952 Norwood School initially served as an Episcopal parish day school. It began humbly in the basement of St John’s Church. Forty children from grades K-2 filled its small space. Frances Marsh a key figure in Norwood’s history directed the school. Her dedication laid the foundation for the institution’s growth. The school’s success outgrew its location. A larger building became necessary. This led to the creation of Norwood Inc a non-profit corporation. The goal was to secure a new facility. However tensions arose between the school and the church. In 1970 the church vestry dismissed Frances Marsh. This prompted the families to support her in establishing a new independent Norwood School. For two years it operated in temporary quarters. In January 1972 Norwood School moved to its present location on River Road in Bethesda. The Steuart Building opened its doors to students. The school’s expansion continued. By 1975 a new building named the Marsh Building was completed. This accommodated upper grades science labs and a gymnasium. In 1995 Norwood acquired an additional 16.7 acres of land for expansion. Grades seven and eight were added in 1998 and 1999 respectively. New buildings included a middle school and an athletic center. These additions provided modern facilities for the growing student body. Throughout its history Norwood School has been guided by dedicated leadership. Five heads of school have shaped its trajectory. Frances Brandis Marsh led the way from 1952 to 1977. She was followed by Thomas C Hudnut Miriam Fulton Block Richard T Ewing Jr and currently Matthew A Gould. Norwood School continues to thrive as a non-profit independent educational institution. It is known for its commitment to academic excellence and its inclusive community. Its expansive campus now boasts multiple buildings including the Steuart Building the Amanda Murray Arts Center the Ewing Building the Marsh Building the Middle School Building and the Rales Athletic Center. The school proudly serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Norwood’s success story is a testament to its founding vision and the enduring commitment of its community. Today Norwood School stands as a testament to its rich history and vibrant present. It offers a diverse range of academic and extracurricular activities.
