Opened in January 2012 Northpine Technical High School stands as a testament to South Africa’s commitment to technical education. This public school located in Northpine City of Cape Town addresses a critical need. The country lacks qualified technical experts. Northpine Technical High School aims to fill that gap. It equips learners for technical careers.
The school’s creation wasn’t spontaneous. In 2009 a steering committee highlighted the need for a technical high school in the Kraaifontein/Brackenfell area. Bellville Tech the nearest option was too far for many prospective students. The Western Cape Education Department responded. They approved construction in Northpine. Construction began in late 2010. The school was completed by November 30 2011.
Northpine Technical High School boasts impressive facilities. These include 27 classrooms three workshops two specialist rooms and five laboratories. A library two computer rooms a school hall and sports facilities complete the impressive setup. This investment reflects the importance placed on technical education. The school cost approximately R40 million a sum exceeding the average new high school build. This higher cost is justifiable given the specialist facilities.
The school initially enrolled students in grades 8 and 9. Around 200 learners were accepted before opening. Applications were processed throughout the process. Mr Edgar Williams served as the acting principal. The school’s capacity is 1200 learners. Currently the student population is much lower. In 2023 the school had 617 learners and 23 educators. This results in a student-teacher ratio of 27:1.
Northpine Technical High School is a Quintile 5 school. This means it receives up to R204 per learner from the Department of Education. However government funding is insufficient to cover all expenses. Therefore the school charges fees. The exact amount is available by contacting the school directly. The school’s commitment to technical education is clear. Its existence is a success story in the face of a significant skills shortage. Northpine Technical High School provides a pathway to technical careers for many learners. It is a vital contributor to South Africa’s future.
