“A lighthouse of truth shining out the Good News.” That’s how Northminster Baptist Church was envisioned. It began as Humberlea Baptist Church. The church was founded in 1947 in Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Ormiston’s garage.
In 1964, a pivotal decision was made. The congregation purchased a 2.5-acre site. It was located at 1725 Finch Ave West. With this purchase came a new name: Northminster Baptist Church. The aim was clear. They wanted to serve the burgeoning York University area.
Northminster Baptist Church held its opening on October 15, 1967. This marked the culmination of faith. It started three years prior with the site purchase. The move aimed to reach a larger population. The area had few churches. Northminster Baptist came into being. It became “a lighthouse of truth”. It shone the Gospel to the York University area.
Significant renovations happened in the spring and summer of 2017. Joint services were held with Lisle Memorial Baptist Church. Northminster Baptist Church celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sunday, October 15, 2017. Founder Mr. Ormiston and Rev. Arnold attended.
In November 2017, they marked another milestone. It was the 70th anniversary of Humberlea Baptist’s founding. Humberlea Baptist later became Northminster Baptist.
Northminster Baptist Church stands as a multicultural church. It is located in North York near York University’s Keele Campus. The church is dedicated to love and knowledge of God. They are committed to Bible teaching. They cultivate a gospel-shaped community.
The church is a member of the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada.
Pastor Scott Hurst joined Northminster in September 2021. He wants to see the gospel take root locally and abroad. He enjoys basketball, books, and superheroes. His family is his greatest treasure.
Northminster Baptist Church holds worship services every Sunday at 10:30 am. Prayer meetings take place on Wednesdays at 7 pm. The church extends a warm welcome to all. Whether seeking a church family or just browsing, all are welcome. The church aims to proclaim biblical truths. These truths can transform lives. They give purpose and direction. Northminster updates its methods. It adjusts to changing times. All are welcome to investigate and dialogue. The church commits itself to Jesus Christ. It believes the Scriptures are authoritative. It presents its position with mutual respect. Northminster Baptist Church continues to thrive. It shares the power of Jesus Christ.
