Remember the name Northmead. It echoes through time and whispers tales of meadows. Northmead is a suburb of Greater Western Sydney. It lies 26 kilometers west of Sydney’s central business district. We are in the City of Parramatta.
Northmead’s story starts with the Dharug people. They were the traditional owners of this land. The British came to Parramatta and changed everything. This area was once part of the Governor’s Domain. What remains of this domain is now Parramatta Park.
Northmead gets its name from its location. It was the north “mead” or meadow of the governor’s domain. Orchards and poultry farms once thrived here. These farms were later subdivided. Darling Mills Creek and Toongabbie Creek border the suburb. They form the beginnings of the Parramatta River.
The land was subdivided between 1859 and 1889. The Northern Meadow and Western Meadow were split. They became Northmead and Westmead. Settlers established orchards. Some of these settlers were George Oakes, Nat Payten, and William Fullagar. Their names are well known in the Parramatta area.
Northmead has a few heritage-listed sites. One is a sandstone house at 64 Windsor Road. It was built in 1850. It served as the manager’s residence for a grain mill. There are also Northmead European rock carvings at 226 Windsor Road.
Northmead offers several commercial areas. The Northmead Shopping Centre is on the corner of Windsor Road and Campbell Street. It has an IGA supermarket and many specialty shops. You can find a Thai restaurant, a medical center, and a florist here. There is also a deli, a butcher, a bakery, and a chemist.
The Junction shops are on the corner of Windsor Road and Briens Road. Here you can find home furnishings, hardware, and car accessories. Officeworks and Winning Appliances are also located here. Subway, Hungry Jack’s, and XS Espresso provide food options.
The southern part of Northmead has a large industrial area. Coca-Cola Amatil is located on Briens Road. A NSW Health Ambulance Superstation is also nearby.
Northmead has several schools. Northmead Public School is on Moxhams Road. Northmead High School is on Campbell Street. The Hills School is on William Street.
Buses serve Northmead. Northmead once had a train line. It was the Rogans Hill railway line. It was decommissioned in 1932.
Northmead’s population was 11,261 in 2021. This is a significant increase from 2006. More apartments have been built in the suburb.
Many notable people have lived in Northmead. Scott Lloyd, a former Lord Mayor, was raised here. Richie Benaud, a cricketer, lived in Northmead. Allan Cunningham, an explorer, also resided here.
Northmead has seen many changes. It evolved from farmland to a residential and industrial hub. The suburb continues to grow and adapt. Northmead blends its rich history with modern development. The area once had sandstone quarries. Moxham’s Quarry was near the Northmead Bowling Club. Darling Mill was an early commercial operation. Later it became Sydney Woollen Mills. Arthur Clifford Howard opened his factory in Northmead in 1926. He manufactured the first Australian-built tractor.
