Established in 1965 Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus has a rich history. It started modestly. The college’s first classes were held in a warehouse. This was in Bailey’s Crossroads. The burgeoning student body soon demanded more space. In 1969 the college purchased 22.5 acres in Alexandria. This land became the Alexandria Campus.
Construction of the Bisdorf Building began in 1971. By 1973 classes moved from the old warehouse to the new Alexandria campus. Enrollment exploded. Over 6000 students registered that fall. The campus continued to grow. Today five buildings stand proudly on 51.4 acres.
One remarkable building is the Rachel M Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center. It opened in 2001. This is a jewel of the campus. It hosts numerous performances and events. The Center for Design Media and the Arts is another significant addition. This state-of-the-art facility opened later. It houses programs in various creative fields. It also includes a bookstore a fitness center and a gymnasium.
The Alexandria Campus offers over 70 programs and degrees. This includes nine foreign languages and an ESL program. The campus serves Alexandria Arlington County Falls Church and eastern Fairfax County. From humble beginnings in a warehouse to its current state. The Northern Virginia Community College Alexandria Campus has become a vital part of the community. It serves thousands of students annually. It reflects the college’s commitment to education and access for all. Its growth is a testament to its enduring success and impact.
