Sun-kissed sands stretch as far as the eye can see. This is the Northern Beaches. A breathtaking panorama unfolds before you. Rolling hills meet sparkling turquoise waters. This is a place of beauty and history.

The Northern Beaches didn’t spring into existence overnight. For millennia the Garigal people called this land home. They fished in the waters and hunted in the forests. Sadly smallpox decimated their population in 1789. Remnants of their presence remain. You can find rock etchings in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

European settlement was slow. The area remained rural for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Reaching the Northern Beaches from Sydney was a long journey. Over 100 kilometers to travel via Mona Vale Road. Roads were poor and the trip took time.

The 1960s brought change. Improved roads and rising living standards led to increased development. The Northern Beaches slowly became more accessible. More people moved here to settle.

In 1906 the Warringah Shire Council formed. Pittwater was incorporated as part of Warringah. However there was a local movement. Many residents in Pittwater felt neglected. They desired their own council. A vote in 1991 showed overwhelming support for secession. It fell just short of the required majority.

Finally in 2016 three councils merged. Manly Warringah and Pittwater became one. The Northern Beaches Council was formed. It governs the area to this day.

Today the Northern Beaches is a thriving part of Sydney. It retains a unique character. Isolated from the bustle of the city. The area has many beautiful beaches. Popular with locals and tourists alike. The suburbs each have their own distinct charm. Manly is known for its vibrant atmosphere. Palm Beach offers tranquility and stunning views.
