“Is that a real eagle?” a student might ask, gazing at the North Point High School mascot. North Point High School stands proudly in Waldorf, Maryland. It’s the largest high school in Charles County, a sprawling 311,000 square feet buzzing with nearly 2,000 students. Opened in 2005, North Point’s eagle mascot echoes Charles County’s motto, “The wild side of the Potomac… Where eagles soar!”. This isn’t your average high school. Instead of the usual seven periods, North Point runs on a unique four-block A/B day schedule. This means longer classes, clocking in at 1 hour and 20 minutes each. Students experience a different set of four classes on alternating days, creating a rhythm all its own. North Point is renowned for its Career and Technical Education program (formerly known as Science, Technology, and Industry or STI). About half the student body dives into these specialized programs, gaining hands-on experience in fields like biotechnology, cybersecurity, automotive technology, culinary arts, and even cosmetology. The other half pursues a more traditional high school curriculum. North Point’s commitment to career readiness shines through these programs, equipping students with practical skills for the future. The school has even earned national recognition. In 2010, North Point’s SkillsUSA chapter soared, taking home gold in Industrial Motor Control and silver in Culinary Arts at the national competition. And in a surprising twist, their quiz bowl team also snagged a gold medal in their very first year competing. From academics to extracurriculars, North Point High School offers a unique learning environment where students can truly create their own tomorrow.
