It’s a three-story testament to the love of reading, nestled next to the Yung Shue Wan Ferry Pier. The North Lamma Public Library was once a modest one-story structure. Now, it’s part of a revitalized project. The government invested $100 million under the district-led Signature Project Scheme. This scheme aimed to address local needs with large-scale ventures. This investment gave birth to the current building. The architecture embodies the phrase “Reading a book on Lamma by the sea”. Imagine a concrete wall, etched with elegant Chinese calligraphy, resembling a book cover. Timber slats run down the side, mimicking the spine of a well-loved novel. Inside, the North Lamma Public Library occupies the first and second floors. Large windows offer mesmerizing sea views. They turn reading into a truly immersive experience. The ground floor houses the Heritage & Cultural Showroom. It’s a treasure trove of Lamma Island’s history and culture. Archaeological finds whisper stories of the past. Historical objects and videos paint a vivid picture of the island’s transformation and its residents’ evolving lives. Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Secretary for Home Affairs Lau Kong-wah inaugurated this unique space in July 2019. The North Lamma Public Library stands as a beacon of knowledge and culture. It seamlessly blends the old with the new. It invites everyone to explore the rich tapestry of Lamma Island.
