Is it abstract or representative? North Down Sculpture stands before you. It invites contemplation. This sculpture has the ability to define and enhance our local environment. It inspires us. It provokes public debate. It plays a significant role in defining the culture of the area. North Sydney is fortunate to have a growing collection of public artworks. This includes several major pieces within the CBD.

The North Sydney Public Art Trail incorporates 20 sites. These include Lavender Bay and Kirribilli. It also features Milsons Point. The trail can be walked in approximately three hours. It can be started at any location. Many of the sites are within close walking distance of the CBD. This makes parts of the trail easy to cover during your lunch break.

North Down Sculpture is part of this trail. Other recent pieces in our CBD art collection include Angles of Incidence. It is a five-meter high striking blue sculpture. It is located at the Victoria Cross intersection. The intersection sits on the corner of Pacific Highway and Miller Street. Throughout the day the large glasswork changes appearance. It responds to light between dawn and dusk.

Missing Corners is also on the corner of Pacific Highway. It stands on Blue and Walker Streets. Missing Corners is a striking entrance statement to North Sydney. The prominent metal and timber sculpture welcomes passing traffic. It comes off the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It provides a focal point for pedestrians. This is a very busy intersection.

There is also a dramatic stainless steel and glass sculpture. It is called A Rotunda for ‘Reflective Encounters’. Contemporary Australian artist Damien Butler created it. The site-specific work responds to its location. It stands opposite St Peter’s Presbyterian Church. It looks outwards to the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. It provides a place of respite and reflection.

North Down Sculpture shares this honor. It is a piece of art that encourages us to slow down. It also makes us observe the city around us. You might discover something new.
