In the early 1900s families flocked to the Chesapeake Bay area. They built summer homes. They needed a church. But the nearest Protestant churches were miles away. Difficult to reach on rough roads. This is where the North Beach Union Church story begins.
The Timberlake family held Sunday school on their porch. Neighbors joined in. Soon hymns filled the air. Visiting ministers added sermons. From these humble beginnings a church was born. In 1911 the “Church in the Woods” was formed. An interdenominational group representing several denominations.
Their first church was small. A private residence today. But the congregation grew. They needed more space. An anonymous donor gave land near the Timberlakes’ cottage. The congregation raised $1000. In 1921 they started building. Services began in 1922. The church was renamed the Union Church of North Beach. The old church bell was moved. It still calls worshippers today.
For two decades ministers traveled from afar. Preaching on summer weekends. Then in 1931 the church got its first permanent pastor Rev WR Frame. This was a big step. It marked the start of a year-round ministry. It reflects the growing permanent population.
Later expansions added Sunday school rooms a kitchen and bathrooms. Improvements continued over the decades. New stained-glass windows a new floor central heating. The church adapted. They met the needs of a changing community.
The church wasn’t just about services. It was about community. Picnics dinners camping trips. Choirs youth groups outreach programs. The church family was strong. They helped each other. They supported the wider community. They even hosted community groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.
