Perched here at North Arm Road Lookout, Middle Cove, can you feel the stories swirling around us? This isn’t just a pretty view. It’s a window into a layered past.

Welcome to North Arm Road Lookout. It is a scenic spot in Middle Cove. The lookout offers stunning views of Sugarloaf Bay. It also overlooks the North Arm of Middle Harbour.

Before us lies a landscape shaped by both nature and human hands. Before European settlement, the Cammeraygal people thrived here. They were a powerful Aboriginal tribe. They knew this land intimately. They harvested shellfish. They sheltered under rock overhangs. Imagine them moving through this very place.

The name Middle Cove refers to the area between the north and south arms of Sugarloaf Bay. Castle Cove was once known as the North Arm of Sugarloaf Bay. The land around Middle Harbour remained largely undeveloped for a long time. This was mainly due to its isolation.

Later, Walter Burley Griffin envisioned Middle Cove as part of a garden suburb. His plans faced financial setbacks. Only a few streets in Middle Cove came to fruition. Castlecrag was the only suburb that eventuated.

Take a look at the Grey Mangrove forest below us. It thrives on the mud flats of the North Arm. These mangroves are vital. They maintain balanced estuarine life cycles. They supply nutrients for plants and animals. Micro-algae, prawns, and crabs all benefit. Healthy mangrove forests support young fish.

Notice the walking track below. It is the North Arm Track. This 4.5km track runs from Castle Cove to H.C. Press Park. Castle Cove was once known as the North Arm of Sugarloaf Bay. The track winds through natural vegetation. You will see mangroves along the way.

The track climbs steeply to North Arm Road from the water’s edge. It passes through sandy river flats. Then it ascends the sandstone ridge above the mangroves.

If you extend your walk, you will find H.C. Press Park. It was once a popular destination. People came from all over the city. They enjoyed day outings there.

Look closer. Can you see traces of the past mingling with the present? The North Arm Road Lookout gives us a chance to reflect. It is a place where nature and history intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty. Consider the stories embedded in this landscape.
