Did the echo of royal hunts once reverberate through Norra Djurgården? It’s hard to imagine as we stand here, surrounded by the tranquility of nature and the grand institutions of knowledge. But yes, this entire area, Norra Djurgården, was once the private hunting ground of Swedish monarchs.

From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Norra Djurgården was a sprawling royal game park. Imagine a vast expanse enclosed by a two-meter-high fence, stretching for miles. Within its confines roamed a magnificent spectacle of up to 1,500 deer. This was a playground for kings, where they indulged in elaborate hunts, sometimes even facing down wolves and bears that dared to trespass.

The echoes of those hunts are still present in Norra Djurgården’s landscape and names. The hill east of Lappkärret pond is still called “Stora Warg-Jagten,” – the Great Wolf Hunt. It was here that King Karl XI and the future Karl XII, then just a prince, took down at least eight wolves in 1689. The royal grip on Norra Djurgården finally loosened in the 19th century, but the area’s royal connections are undeniable. It is now part of the world’s first national city park, a testament to its enduring natural and historical significance.

As we explore further, remember that Norra Djurgården whispers tales of both wild nature and royal grandeur. It’s a place where the past and present coexist harmoniously, offering a unique perspective on Stockholm’s rich tapestry of stories.
