Perhaps you have heard whispers of a place where the earth kisses the sky. That place is Noordhoek Peak. This giant stands tall at 754 meters. It offers views that stretch to the horizon.
Noordhoek Peak resides in the Silvermine Reserve. This is part of the Table Mountain National Park. People travel from all over just to hike here. The Peak hike is beautiful. There are so many different aspects to admire.
The origin of Noordhoek’s name holds a bit of mystery. It dates back to the earliest white settlers after Jan van Riebeck’s arrival in 1652. Some believe it refers to the northern corner of the Fish Hoek/Kommetjie Valley. Others say it is from the powerful northern winds. It could even be a corruption of Norwegian Corner. The most likely explanation is its geographical position.
Imagine hiking up the Noordhoek Peak Circuit. It is about 7km long. You can complete it in about 2 and a half hours. The gravel road is comfortable. It allows you to pass other people, cyclists, and dogs.
As you climb higher you will see different views. Muizenberg and the Zandvlei Estuary stretch out to your left. On a clear day, you can see all the way around the coast to Gordon’s Bay. Gaze behind you for a great view of the dam. The trail curves to the right. Fish Hoek beach appears on your left. Climb higher still to see Simon’s Town, Clovelly, and Long Beach Mall. Look towards the iconic long stretch of white sand. You will spot the Slangkop lighthouse in Kommetjie.
Keep an eye out for a path to Kygo’s Pool. It is a small catchment area. Dogs take a refreshing dip here. Continuing on the trail, you will feel it plateauing. A path on your left leads to Noordhoek Peak. A large stone cairn marks your destination.
Atop Noordhoek Peak, the views are breathtaking. Hout Bay sits in the distance. Chapman’s Peak Drive winds below. To your right, find the Eagles Nest Lookout point.
The community is building things. Earth & Co and Project Noordhoek created a beachside bench. It is built entirely out of EcoBricks. The Noordhoek community contributed to this project. They care about the environment. The bench contains 800 EcoBricks. That amounts to 400 kgs of plastic.
