Puget’s journal entry reads Noon Breakfast Point. This unassuming name marks a significant spot in Vancouver’s history. Right here at Noon Breakfast Point we stand at the southwest tip of Point Grey. This is where Lieutenant Peter Puget of Captain Vancouver’s expedition first set foot. It was June 1792. Puget’s crew had travelled down from Birch Bay. They explored the coastline. They paused for lunch near present-day Blaine and White Rock. Then they rounded Boundary Bay to Point Roberts. After a midday meal at Point Roberts the crew continued. They explored the area which would become Vancouver. Puget informally named this very spot Noon Breakfast Point. The name commemorates that memorable lunch. He documented this moment in his journal. This journal is a treasure. It’s found in the Vancouver Public Library. It shows the earliest European documentation of this area. It helps us understand the beginning of Vancouver’s story. The British Library also holds original notes about this voyage. Years later in 1981 Noon Breakfast Point was officially recognized. This was thanks to the efforts of J E Ted Roberts. He championed Puget’s contribution to Vancouver’s exploration. He ensured that this significant site would be remembered. Today we stand on a piece of land rich with history. We stand on a point of land that holds the legacy of exploration. It is a land where the past whispers stories of discovery. The quiet beauty of Noon Breakfast Point invites reflection. It is a place to reflect on the adventurers who came before us. They charted a course into the unknown. Their journeys laid the foundation for the vibrant city of Vancouver. Their legacy continues to inspire us all. Remember this humble name. It carries the weight of history and discovery. Noon Breakfast Point. A place where the past meets the present.
