Founded in 1895 the Nokesville Church of the Brethren stands before you. Its history is rich and layered like a well-loved quilt. Two families from Virginia’s Rockingham County began it all. They moved to Nokesville in 1883. More families followed creating a strong Brethren community. Two meeting houses were built. Valley Meeting House in 1887 and Nokesville Meeting House in 1896.
The congregation officially formed in 1895 boasting 75 members. By 1909 membership swelled to 233. That same year Hebron Seminary a school with strong Brethren ties opened nearby. It served as a church home for Nokesville Brethren until 1947 when it was sadly demolished. The current brick building which you see today was dedicated in 1948. Hebron Seminary closed its doors in 1924 but its positive influence on the church and community remains.
Growth led to two congregations in 1917. However they rejoined as the Nokesville Church in 1958. In the 1930s the church transitioned from a free ministry to a pastoral program. Since then about ten pastors have served. The large addition completed in 1994 supports many local outreach programs.
Today the Nokesville Church of the Brethren remains a vibrant community. It’s committed to service stewardship of creation and peacemaking. They hold to the New Testament as their guide. They strive to grow closer to God through worship service and spiritual formation. Every Sunday from September to June coffee fellowship begins at 930 am. Church school follows at 10 am and worship service at 11 am. Their mission is to continue the work of Jesus Christ sharing good news through faith love and service. Their doors are always open. This church is truly a testament to faith community and enduring spirit.
