Unveiling a century of innovation, we stand before Nissan in Tokyo. Nissan’s story began in 1911. It started as the Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works in Tokyo. The company produced its first car in 1914. It was called the DAT. DAT was an acronym. It represented the investors’ surnames. These were Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Meitaro Takeuchi.
In 1933, Yoshisuke Aikawa founded Nihon Sangyo. The name Nissan came from this. It was an abbreviation used on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. At this time, Nissan controlled foundries and auto parts businesses. Aikawa entered automobile manufacturing in 1933.
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. was established in 1934. Aikawa separated the automobile parts division of Tobata Casting. He incorporated it as a new subsidiary. By 1935, Nissan completed its Yokohama plant. That year, 44 Datsuns were shipped to Asia and South America. The Yokohama plant produced the first car with an integrated assembly system.
During World War II, Nissan built trucks, airplanes, and engines. These were for the Imperial Japanese Army. In 1937, Nissan moved its headquarters to Xinjing. The company changed its name to Manchuria Heavy Industries Developing Co.
After the war, Nissan resumed passenger vehicle production. The Datsun brand became popular. In the 1950s and 1960s, Nissan expanded globally. It exported vehicles to the United States. The company invested in research and development. This led to new technologies and innovations.
The 1970s marked a major breakthrough. Nissan introduced the Z-series sports car. The 240Z was released in 1970. It helped Nissan establish itself in the sports car market. Nissan also introduced the Sunny. It became a popular car in Japan and other markets.
In 1983, the Datsun brand was phased out. The Nissan brand was phased in.
Facing financial difficulties in 1999, Nissan allied with Renault. Carlos Ghosn became CEO in 2001. He implemented the Nissan Revival Plan. This led to record profits and a revitalization of Nissan’s model line.
Today, Nissan sells vehicles under the Nissan and Infiniti brands. It formerly used the Datsun brand. Nismo and Autech offer in-house performance tuning products. Nissan operates in over 160 countries. It continues to innovate in autonomous driving and electric vehicles.
