Was the Nikolajka named after a Russian hero? Many people in Prague believe this, but it’s not true. The Nikolajka estate, a beautiful building you see right here in front of us, was named after its original owner. He was a lawyer named JUDr. Antonín František Nikolai. He built the estate at the end of the 17th century. The Nikolajka doesn’t look quite as it did back then, though. In the 18th century, the building underwent a major reconstruction. It gained its current late-classicist facade in 1860. Today, the Nikolajka stands as a protected historic building. If you could step inside and stroll through its garden, you’d find a charming chapel. Inside the chapel’s niche, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary stands watch.
