A century and a half of faith. That’s what Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church represents. Standing before you is more than just brick and mortar. It’s a testament to enduring faith community and resilience.
Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church boasts a rich history. It’s a story woven from two distinct congregations. The Nichols Memorial Methodist Protestant Church in Odenton Maryland opened in 1891. It was the brainchild of John Robert Nichols a Methodist minister for fifty years. His family and friends contributed land materials and furnishings making it a true community effort.
Meanwhile in Admiral Maryland now Fort George G Meade the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church South was established in 1872. The Disney family generously donated the land. After World War I the government acquired the land for military expansion. Bethel Church relocated to Odenton.
These two churches followed parallel paths. Ministers often served multiple churches. The churches served as vital community hubs. They were not just places of worship but centers for social life. Strong bonds formed between members creating deep feelings of belonging.
In 1939 a significant event occurred. The Methodist Episcopal Church the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the Methodist Protestant Church unified. This led to a merger in 1942. The Nichols Memorial and Bethel churches combined forming the Nichols Memorial Bethel Methodist Church.
Further growth spurred a move. Starting in 1958 discussions began about building a new church. The new building on Route 175 and Murray Road saw its first service on September 23 1962. The church continued to grow and expand over the years.
In 1968 another significant union took place. The Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church merged creating the United Methodist Church. Nichols-Bethel became Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church.
Today Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church flourishes. It stands as a testament to its enduring heritage. With over 130 years of history the church continues to serve the Greater Odenton Area and beyond. It’s a place of worship a community center and a beacon of faith. The church offers diverse ministries from preschool programs to overseas mission support. It actively participates in community outreach programs.
