Amidst the bustling energy of Ho Chi Minh City, find a sanctuary of peace at Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Thuận Hòa. This Catholic church, whose name translates to “Harmony and Peace,” stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of its community. Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Thuận Hòa’s story begins in 1954. A group of Catholic families, originally from Hai Phong Diocese, relocated to the Bai De area. This area, known as Ấp Tân Hải, was in Bình Trước xã, Đức Tu District. They sought a new life and established the Tân Hải Parish. The first priest, Father Đaminh Nguyễn Hữu Đống, guided the burgeoning community. That same year, a temporary thatched church became their spiritual home, offering a space for worship and community gathering. Three years later, in 1957, the name changed. Father Simon Hòa Nguyễn Văn Hiền officially renamed Tân Hải Parish to Thuận Hòa, signifying a new chapter in its history. Father Đaminh Phạm Quang Khanh became the first parish priest of Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Thuận Hòa, laying the foundation for its growth and development. In 1958, the community, led by Father Đaminh, constructed a new brick-and-mortar church, measuring 13m x 35m, replacing the original thatched structure. Over the years, successive parish priests nurtured the faith of the Thuận Hòa parishioners. They also oversaw renovations and improvements to the church building and its facilities. A significant milestone in the church’s history came in the year 2000. Under the guidance of Father Marcô Nguyễn Tuyên Huyền, construction began on a new church building. This building was completed and consecrated in May 2001. Two years later, the community celebrated the inauguration of a new bell tower and other structures. Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Thuận Hòa continued to evolve to meet the needs of its growing community. In 2005, Father Micae Hoàng Đình Cung oversaw the construction of additional facilities around the church. Later, Father Giuse Nguyễn Văn Hòa took charge. He focused on further renovations, including tiling the church floor. Today, Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Thuận Hòa remains a vibrant hub for the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City, offering a space for worship, community, and spiritual growth. It’s a place where the harmony and peace reflected in its name continue to resonate.
