Across the Ben Nghe Canal, Cầu Mống stretches, a bridge painted in a striking emerald green. Cầu Mống isn’t just a bridge. It’s a whisper of old Saigon, a love letter written in rivets and steel. Built in 1894 by the French company Sociétée de construction de Levallois-Perret, Cầu Mống, originally Pont des Messageries Maritimes, is a survivor. It’s the oldest known intact bridge in Ho Chi Minh City, a testament to a bygone era. Cầu Mống has witnessed the city’s transformation, from a French colonial outpost to the bustling metropolis it is today. Originally built for highway traffic, Cầu Mống now serves pedestrians only. The vehicular ramps are gone, replaced by staircases leading to the bridge’s pedestrian walkway. This change hasn’t diminished its charm. In fact, it has enhanced it. Cầu Mống is a place for lovers, for dreamers, and for those seeking a moment of peace amidst the city’s chaos. Look closely at the bridge’s railing. It’s a beautiful riveted design, but it’s not the original. Cầu Mống has seen at least three railings in its lifetime. The current one, while not original, maintains the historic riveted design. Some believe it might have been salvaged from another bridge, adding another layer of history to this already fascinating structure. Cầu Mống, meaning “Rainbow Bridge,” also earned the nickname “Love Bridge.” Couples attach locks inscribed with their names, a symbol of their enduring love. The bridge’s long, shallow arch spans approximately 270 feet, a considerable feat of engineering for 1894. Its emerald green paint stands out against the modern concrete and glass buildings, a vibrant reminder of the city’s rich past. As you stand here, imagine the countless souls who have crossed this bridge over the years. Lovers on romantic dates, photographers capturing its unique beauty, and ordinary citizens seeking a moment of respite. Cầu Mống is more than just a bridge. It’s a living piece of history, a symbol of connection, and a testament to the enduring power of love. It stands as a silent observer of Saigon’s ever-evolving story, inviting you to become a part of its narrative.
