“Ngai Tau, a peak of history,” I murmur. This isn’t just any ordinary hill. It’s a place where stories of resilience and change echo through time. Today, we’ll uncover some tales.

Ngai Tau stands as a silent witness. It watches over the ever-changing landscape of Hong Kong. Its name might not be known to all. Yet its presence is deeply intertwined with the region’s story.

Consider the nearby villages like Tung Tau Tsuen. Tung Tau Tsuen was formerly named Tung Tau Lei. This village was established during the Ming Dynasty. Two Tang clan members saw potential in Ha Tsuen. They envisioned markets and fish production. Tang Hung Wai and Tang Hung Chih built two villages. These were originally named Sai Tau Lei and Tung Tau Lei.

Or think of Kong Tau Tsuen. This village is in the Shap Pat Heung area. In 1911, Kong Tau had a population of 46. Twenty-six were men.

Then there’s Kan Tau Tsuen in Fanling. This village is part of the Fanling District Rural Committee.

These villages reflect a history of growth, resilience, and adaptation. Like Ngai Tau, they stand as testaments to the passage of time. They bear witness to the challenges and triumphs of the people who call this land home.

Imagine the early settlers. They worked hard to build their communities. Fishing and agriculture were their mainstays. The land and sea provided. They shaped their lives around these resources.

The “Alliance of Ten” formed in the early 19th century. Ten local Hakka village districts united. They defended against pirates. They established a stronger market network. Sha Tau Kok became a bustling trade hub. Tung Wo Market was at the center. It hosted trade for local crops and fish.

British Imperial encroachments in the late 19th century brought change. Sha Tau Kok was split by the Shenzhen River. The Second Convention of Peking determined this. The New Territories were leased to Britain.

The border controls remained lax initially. Villagers traded freely. Chung Ying Street emerged as a new economic axis.

The Kowloon-Canton Railway extension opened in 1912. It connected Fanling and Sha Tau Kok. It faced problems and closed in 1928.

The Chinese Civil War in the 1940s led to refugee influxes. Smuggling and illegal immigration increased. The Frontier Closed Area was established in 1951. Sha Tau Kok became a restricted zone. This impacted the community significantly.

The opening up of China in 1978 brought new hope. Tourism from mainland China increased. Chung Ying Street became a shopping destination.

Since 2012, the government has opened parts of the Frontier Closed Area. Sha Tau Kok retains its rural charm.

Ngai Tau has watched it all. The ebb and flow of fortune. The resilience of the people. The preservation of heritage.

As we stand here, let’s remember these stories. Ngai Tau is not just a peak. It’s a landmark that connects us to the past. It reminds us of the enduring spirit of this land.
