Did you know that Nga Ying Kok almost became an iron ore mine? This quiet coastal spot holds a secret. It was nearly transformed into a bustling industrial site. But let’s delve into the story of Nga Ying Kok.
Nga Ying Kok is more than just a scenic location. It is located in Lantau North Country Park. It offers a splendid ocean view. But there’s more to it than meets the eye.
Back in 1959, plans were hatched to turn this area into an iron ore mine. The vision was ambitious. Employing 50 miners. Extracting 3,000 tons of ore each month. The target market was Japan. Imagine the transformation. This serene landscape replaced by machinery.
The mining operation was not successful. Today, Nga Ying Kok is a campsite. This is next to the Tai O coastal path. Small platforms cut into the hillside accommodate tents. Trees and bushes surround the area.
The idea of a mine near Tai O came from an old book photo. It showed a mining establishment on Lantau. There was a temporary pier, mining accommodation, offices, and a chimney.
A prospecting license was issued in 1958. It covered about 49 acres. Mr. Wong Yu Tso of the Hong Kong Mining Products Co was the licensee. They sought iron and manganese minerals.
Developing a mine is expensive. Securing skilled workers is essential. Maintaining operations is crucial. There was no road access to the site. Marine transport was the only supply route.
Positive stories about the site appeared in newspapers. This aimed to attract financial backers. One article quoted a mine employee. It said surface mining could last for 30 years due to plentiful reserves.
Access to the Nga Ying Kok mine site involves a pleasant 2.5km walk from Tai O. This is along the coastal path to the campsite. The area is heavily vegetated now. But elements of the original site are still visible. The pipeline and remains of the rock pier are there.
Miners excavated benches across the hillside. This exposed the rock. Drill holes mark where explosives were used. Loose rock was stacked for later collection.
A rock sample had a higher density than local granite. This indicated additional minerals. The miners found a rich mineral ore. But it was not commercially attractive enough.
Nga Ying Kok offers more than just natural beauty. It is also near Tai O. It retains traditions, natural ecology, and unique water houses. You can reach Nga Ying Kok by bus from Tung Chung Town Centre or Mui Wo. A 40-minute walk from Nam Chung Tsuen follows.
So, as you enjoy the coastal views from Nga Ying Kok, remember its past. Imagine the miners and their ambitious plans. This quiet campsite was once on the brink of becoming a major iron ore mine.
