Journey back to 1739. Ng Tung Chai Village was just beginning to flourish, nestled at the foot of Tai Mo Shan. The Yau, Sham, and Koo families, Hakka people, built their lives here. They cultivated the land and honored their ancestors in the village’s three ancestral halls. Imagine the rhythmic clang of hammers echoing through the valley as they constructed the Yau Ancestral Hall around 1800. Today, this structure stands as a Grade III historic building, a testament to their enduring legacy. Ng Tung Chai Village wasn’t just a place of homes and farms. It was a center of learning. Two study halls, the Shum Study Hall and the Tung Hing Tong, provided education for villagers of all ages. The Shum Study Hall, with its century-long history, served as a night school until the Lam Tsuen Public School opened in 1950. Ng Tung Chai Village is also the gateway to natural wonders. The famous Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls cascade down the slopes of Tai Mo Shan. These falls are more than just scenic beauty. They are woven into the fabric of the village, providing water and shaping the lives of its inhabitants. In the mid-1970s, a Taoist temple named Man Tak Yuen was established south of Ng Tung Chai Village. Along the path to the waterfalls, this temple adds a spiritual dimension to the natural splendor of the area. Ng Tung Chai Village remains a living testament to its Hakka founders. It’s a place where history, culture, and nature intertwine, inviting you to explore its rich past and breathtaking landscapes.
