What began as a humble gathering in a school hall has blossomed into the vibrant NG Kerk Proteahoogte. This church stands as a testament to faith community and growth.

The story of NG Kerk Proteahoogte starts with the story of its parent. In 1987, a group of believers from the Heidekoppie congregation felt a calling to establish their own church. On March 4 1987, the members of ward B of Heidekoppie gathered in the hall of the Bastion Primary School. They decided to secede as the congregation of Brackenfell-Proteahoogte. Just four days later, on March 8 1987, the first church service was held in the Bastion Primary School hall. That same evening, Reverend Jos van der Merwe from Heidekoppie was called as the first minister of the congregation. He was received and confirmed on March 22 1987.

Imagine the excitement as the newly formed NG Kerk Proteahoogte received its “bride price” on July 29 1987. This included a 10000 square meter plot in Heuwel Street with a R100000 bond. They also received R15000 in cash to get the congregation running.

The congregation of NG Kerk Proteahoogte dreamed of having their own church home. On February 26 1989, the first sod was turned for the church center. Finally on April 29 1990, the community center was inaugurated.

Over the years, NG Kerk Proteahoogte has been served by several dedicated ministers. These include Reverend Josua Van der Merwe. Others are Hendrik Jakobus Gerhardus Van Heerden, Hendrik Francois Prins and Hermanus Jacobus Strydom. Also Jacobus Ernst Germishuys, Daniel George Murray, Siegfried Werner Louw and Christo Botha. Each contributed to the spiritual growth of the congregation.

The area of Proteahoogte has been part of various congregations throughout history. Initially it was part of Kaapstad from 1665. Later it became part of Stellenbosch from 1686. It also belonged to Tijgerberg now Durbanville from 1826. And to Kuilsrivier from 1903, Kruispad from 1944 now Brackenfell Mother Congregation since 1978. As well as Heidekoppie from 1981. Since 1987, it has been the home of the NG Kerk Proteahoogte.

Today NG Kerk Proteahoogte continues to be a beacon of faith and community. It offers family services and children’s groups. There are also youth care groups. The church actively encourages everyone to join a care group. It provides a sense of belonging and support. For those planning to marry, the church offers premarital classes. The church also celebrates the baptism of young children. It is a special occasion for the congregation.

So as you stand before the NG Kerk Proteahoogte remember its journey. From a small group meeting in a school hall to a thriving church community. It is a place where faith is nurtured community is celebrated and all are welcome.
