Newlands Cricket Ground has a rich history dating back to 1888. The Western Province Cricket Club secured a lease on part of Mariendal Farm. The annual rent was 50 pounds. In 1888 they signed a 25-year lease. The rent increased to 100 pounds. Life members contributed 25 pounds each. They raised 350 pounds to construct a pavilion.
The ground officially opened on January 2nd 1888. A two-day match was held between Mother Country and Colonial Born. This event became a regular fixture. Before the Australians arrived in 1902 pine trees lined the perimeter. These were replaced with oak trees. This area is now the popular Oaks Enclosure.
Newlands hosted its first Test match in March 1889. England defeated South Africa. There have been 56 Test matches played here. South Africa has won 23 of them. Their opponents have won 22. Eleven matches ended in a draw. The last team to beat South Africa here was India in January 2024.
The first One Day International was in December 1992. South Africa beat India by 6 wickets. Newlands has hosted 41 One Day Internationals. This includes five in the 2003 Cricket World Cup. South Africa has won 30 of its ODI games here.
Newlands favours spinners. Most grounds favour pacemen or batsmen. The Western Cape has a history of producing good spinners. Paul Adams is a recent example.
The City of Cape Town approved a rezoning application in 2016. This aimed to transform Newlands Cricket Ground. It would become a mixed-use precinct. The cricket field and seating were excluded from development. An office block development was announced in 2019. This will make Newlands a mixed-use precinct. Sanlam owns 51% and the Western Province Cricket Association owns 49%.
The ground has a capacity of 25000. It is known for its electric atmosphere. The New Year’s Test is an annual tradition. It draws fans from around the world. A tour provides a behind-the-scenes look. You can access the dressing rooms and media centre. You can even walk on the turf.
