Established in 1863 Newington College stands proudly before you. Its history is rich and layered like the sandstone of its Founder’s Building. Initially a Wesleyan Collegiate Institute it opened with just sixteen boys. This small group laid the foundation for a great institution. Newington House at Silverwater was its first home. Located on the Parramatta River it was a significant location. Newington was the first Australian school to play rugby football. It also held the first school athletics carnival.

The college’s growth necessitated a move to Stanmore. A grand stone edifice designed by Thomas Rowe was erected. It is a stunning example of scholastic Gothic Revival architecture. The building’s construction was a major undertaking. Sir George Wigram Allen a philanthropist played a crucial role. He provided significant funding. He even laid one of the commemorative stones. The official opening was a grand event in 1881.

Throughout the 20th century Newington evolved. Its connection to theological training ended in 1914. A war memorial designed by Old Newingtonian William Hardy Wilson was unveiled in 1921. This commemorated the sacrifices of Old Boys in World War I. Separate preparatory schools were established. Wyvern House opened in 1938. Another preparatory school was founded on Sydney’s North Shore in 1957.

The college continues to expand. The Senior Block and Resources Centre Library were opened during Tony Rae’s headmastership. A new Physical Education Centre followed. Wyvern House eventually moved to a new campus. The Concordia Club was acquired further expanding its grounds.

A significant development was the addition of sixteen houses. This significantly expanded from the original eight. The names honour Old Newingtonians and women of importance. The houses reflect the college’s rich heritage and inclusive approach. Newington continues to offer a holistic education. It prepares students for both the International Baccalaureate and the NSW Higher School Certificate. The college has added many impressive buildings. They include the Lawrence Pyke Science Centre and the Duckmanton Drama Centre.

In 2026 a major change will take place. Newington will become co-educational. Girls will be admitted into Year 5. The aim is to be fully co-educational by 2033. This transition represents a new chapter for this historic institution. Its story continues to unfold. Newington College’s legacy is secure. Its future is bright. This is Newington College a place where history and innovation intertwine.
