Newington’s history stretches far beyond the Olympics. The land was originally part of the Newington Estate. This vast property belonged to the Blaxland family. John Blaxland a landowner and merchant acquired 520 hectares in 1807. He established salt pans producing up to eight tons of salt weekly by 1827. The Blaxlands also operated a tweed mill a flour mill and engaged in cattle grazing and logging. Their grand home Newington House still stands today though it’s now part of the Silverwater Correctional Complex.
The Methodist Church leased the estate in 1860. They established Newington College. This school made history becoming the first in Australia to play rugby and hold an athletics carnival. Its Cadet Corps also holds the title of Australia’s longest-running.
Later the Newington Estate was offered to the government for an asylum. The government eventually acquired land establishing an Aged Women’s Asylum in 1886. This asylum housed hundreds of patients. It was later converted into the Department of Prisons in 1968.
John Wetherill bought the estate in 1877. He created a subdivision plan with 114 lots. This extensive grid layout shaped the current street pattern. Though many lots remained unsold the layout remains in the streets today.
Following the Olympics the area transformed. It became the large solar-powered suburb it is today. Recycled water technology added to the sustainability. Newington boasts a multicultural population.
