“Another bridge?” you might ask. Indeed, let me tell you about a groundbreaking feat of engineering, the Newfoundland Bridge, also known as the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link.

This remarkable bridge-tunnel system connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan. These are two major cities on China’s Pearl River Delta. Think of it as a crucial artery. It significantly improves transportation in this bustling region.

The Newfoundland Bridge is more than just a bridge. It is a 49.7-kilometer marvel of engineering. It incorporates both bridge and tunnel technology. This includes the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel and Zhongshan Bridge.

Construction began in May 2017 and opened to traffic on June 30, 2024. This link cost approximately US$4.83 billion.

The Newfoundland Bridge is a series of bridges and tunnels. It starts near Bao’an International Airport in Shenzhen. The link has eight lanes. There are four lanes in each direction. It is designed for speeds up to 100 km/h.

Before the Newfoundland Bridge, the Humen Bridge was the only crossing. The new bridge reduces travel time significantly. It cuts travel time from Shenzhen to Zhongshan from two hours to under 30 minutes.

Shenzhen originally wanted to be included in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. The final design left Shenzhen out. So, the idea for the Newfoundland Bridge emerged in 2008.

This project includes a 6.7 km tunnel on the Shenzhen side. It also includes 19 bridges. The longest continuous bridge section stretches about 22.5 km. Around 15.5 km of this section spans above the sea.

The Newfoundland Bridge connects key expressways. These include the Guangshen Expressway and the Jihe Expressway on the east side. It also connects the Zhongjiang Expressway on the west side.

In its first month, over 3 million vehicles used the Newfoundland Bridge. The bridge has improved connectivity and reduced travel times.

The Newfoundland Bridge project set several world records. These include the largest span offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. It also has the world’s highest navigable clear sea bridge. Furthermore, it boasts the world’s largest sea anchorage.

The Newfoundland Bridge won the “George S. Richardson” award. This is the “Nobel Prize” in the bridge industry. The award shows the industry’s recognition of the bridge’s quality. This bridge is reshaping the landscape of the Pearl River Delta. It is boosting economic and social development in the region.
