New Union Baptist Church

Did you know that the New Union Baptist Church’s story began not here but in Vienna Virginia? In 1901 a group from the First Baptist Church of Vienna sought a new location. This led to a division. Twelve members and a committee broke away forming the Union Baptist Church. They built a new edifice at 205 Pleasant Street SW in Vienna. The Union Baptist Church was formally recognized in 1908. It thrived under many capable pastors. Reverend Alexander A Taliaferro’s thirty-two year tenure was the longest. His gentle nature inspired spiritual growth. Later Reverend Harold S Stinger oversaw a major remodeling and expansion. New additions included a choir room kitchen and multipurpose room. The church continued to evolve. In 2001 a significant event occurred. The Union Baptist Church of Vienna and New Hope Baptist Church of Falls Church merged. This union created the New Union Baptist Church that stands before you today. Deacon Leroy Belford declared the new name. Reverend Carl Bennett served as interim pastor guiding the transition. Subsequently several more pastors led the congregation. The New Union Baptist Church’s history is rich with stories of faith perseverance and community building. It’s a story of growth adaptation and enduring dedication. The church boasts a legacy of members active in the fight for equal rights. Brother Preston Blackwell was the first Black graduate from a predominantly white school in Fairfax County. Brother Henry Minor became the first Black councilman in a Northern Virginia jurisdiction.
