This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and the power of community. The New Testament Church of God-Scarborough’s roots trace back to 1956 a pivotal year in Trinidad and Tobago’s religious landscape. Before then there was the Christian General Assembly. It was led by Reverend Edward Dickson Hasmatali and his wife Vera. They held services in Plaisance Point-a-Pierre and Union Village. Their dedication spread the word of God throughout the island.
Imagine the Hasmatalis’ tireless efforts. They yearned for a stronger international connection. This led them to the Church of God in Barbados. A merger followed in July 1956. This marked the official birth of The New Testament Church of God in Trinidad and Tobago. The amalgamation brought eight churches eight missions fifteen ministers and 350 members together. Among the early ministers were W S Ramai S Mathura and many others who worked alongside the Hasmatalis.
Missionaries from the USA poured their hearts into building this community of faith. Bishop and Mrs A W Brummett Bishop and Mrs T R Morse and many others dedicated years to this mission. Their commitment was inspiring.
Fast forward to 1985. Reverend Stephen Mohammed was appointed as the first National Overseer. He served for twelve years. Later Reverend Edward Daniel Walkins took the reins for five years. Reverend Mohammed returned to the role in 2002. His leadership helped guide the church through periods of growth and change.
Today the New Testament Church of God-Scarborough stands tall. It represents decades of devotion. The church boasts thousands of members. It’s a cornerstone of the community. It stands as a beacon of hope and faith. It’s a place of solace. A place of unity and spiritual growth. The New Testament Church of God-Scarborough truly represents the enduring spirit of faith in Tobago.
