Across the sprawling hills and vibrant valleys lies the story of the New Territories. The New Territories isn’t just a geographical designation. It’s a testament to a pivotal moment in Hong Kong’s history. The Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory in 1898 marked the beginning of a 99-year lease. This agreement between Great Britain and China drastically expanded Hong Kong’s boundaries. It incorporated the land north of Boundary Street on the Kowloon Peninsula, stretching from Mirs Bay in the east to Deep Bay in the west. This expansive region, along with islands like Lantau, became known as the New Territories. Prior to this, Hong Kong consisted primarily of Hong Kong Island and the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula. The lease significantly shaped Hong Kong’s future, providing much-needed space for a rapidly growing population and transforming the region’s dynamics. The New Territories encompasses a diverse landscape. Mountainous terrain blends seamlessly with fertile valleys. These valleys are some of Hong Kong’s most productive farmlands. Yet, nestled within this landscape, bustling towns like Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, and Tai Po emerged as hubs of commerce and residential life. They showcase the unique blend of rural tradition and urban modernity that defines the New Territories. In 1997, as the 99-year lease expired, the New Territories, along with the rest of Hong Kong, was returned to China. This historic event marked the end of British rule and a new chapter for the New Territories. The return integrated this vital region back into China’s framework, preserving its rich history and setting the stage for its continued growth. The New Territories, with a population nearing four million in 2016, is a vibrant mix of tradition and progress. It embodies a unique chapter in Hong Kong’s history, illustrating the area’s resilience and dynamism.
