Australia’s oldest military barracks stand before us. Within these walls lies the New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum. It’s a place where history comes alive.

The New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum commemorates the NSW Lancers. It also honors the Australian Light Horse, Cavalry, and Armoured Corps. Established in 1958 at the Parramatta Lancer Barracks, the museum preserves relics. These relics tell the story of the Royal NSW Lancers and their predecessors.

The museum collects items from other Light Horse Regiments. It also gathers items from the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. The collection boasts over 7000 items. Many are of international significance.

The New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum is the only official military museum in NSW and the ACT. It restores and maintains heritage military vehicles. One example is the Bren Gun Carrier.

The Matilda Tank ACE holds international acclaim. It was the first tank off the landing craft at Balikpapan in 1945. Volunteers restored it after it sat in a paddock for 50 years. ACE is now in wartime fighting condition. You can sometimes hear its engines start. It drives around for public events.

Before 1948, the regiment acted as the Vice-Regal Escort. They escorted the Governors of NSW and the Governors-General of Australia. This happened at major public events. These events included the opening of the first Parliament and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum traces the regiment’s history from 1885 to the present day. The 1st/15th Royal NSW Lancers is Australia’s oldest and most decorated Regiment.

The regiment began in 1885. The Governor approved a volunteer cavalry corps in Sydney. It was known as the Sydney Light Horse Volunteers. They converted to the Sydney Lancers that same year. In 1897, the historic Parramatta Barracks became the Regimental Headquarters. The Lancers still occupy the Barracks today. They are nicknamed the Parramatta Lancers. The regiment gained the title “Royal” in 1935.

Leading up to WWII, the cavalry became motorized machine gun regiments. The NSW Lancers were among the first to give up their horses. They used Vickers machine guns on motor lorries. During WWII, the regiment joined the 3rd Army Tank Brigade. They became the 1st Australian Army Tank Battalion. Later, it was renamed the 1st Australian Armoured Regiment. They pioneered the Matilda infantry tank in the jungle.

Today, the regiment operates as light cavalry scouts. They use light skin scout vehicles. Their mission is to support the 51st Battalion. The 1st/15th Royal NSW Lancers Regiment Headquarters remains at Lancer Barracks.

In 1885, the Sydney Lancers became the NSW Vice Regal escort. This role continued until WWII. The regiment’s first public appearance was in 1885. They escorted the Governor to farewell the NSW contingent to the Sudan. They attended the opening of State and Federal Parliaments. They were also present at the inauguration of Canberra.

The New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum holds many significant items. These include a WWI 1st Light Horse uniform. It also has an internationally rare Bergmann MP 18.1 sub-machine gun. You’ll also find Lt Col McArthur-Onslow’s drinking mug from Gallipoli.

The New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum stands as a testament. It highlights the dedication and sacrifice of Australia’s finest soldiers. As you leave this place, remember the stories. Remember the legacy of the Royal NSW Lancers.
