Its roots stretch back to the early 20th century. It became one of the first African-American churches in West Tampa.

In 2002, Greater New Salem Primitive Baptist Church became incorporated. The church is officially named GREATER NEW SALEM PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH INC. Albert Wilson is listed as CEO. Brenda S Ford is the Secretary. M Wilkins serves as Treasurer. Tommy Warmack is the Comptroller. Kreg Brown is the Chairman.

In February, a devastating fire struck the historic church building. The building stood on Oregon Street for 65 years. The fire was ruled accidental. Damages were estimated at $400000. The building’s shell and foundation were razed. But this disaster did not deter the congregation. Services were held the Sunday after the fire. They took place in the shadows of the burned-out sanctuary.

Showing incredible resolve, New Salem secured temporary meeting space. Mt. Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist Church offered their space in East Tampa. The church currently holds services there on Sundays. They also host Bible study on Wednesdays.

Elder Benjamin Curry is a pastor at Greater New Salem Primitive Baptist Church. He ministers at 1605 N Nebraska Avenue in Tampa.

The congregation’s unwavering faith is its strength. Despite the loss of their physical building, the church’s spirit remains strong. New Salem is determined to rebuild. The new location will likely be on Tampa’s east side. A large number of the church’s members live in that area. Many also reside in Brandon and other municipalities in east Hillsborough County. Since relocating to Mt. Calvary, attendance has increased among east side members. A new church building could cost up to $1.5 million.
