From its humble beginnings on November 25 1918 New Mount Olive Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. This wasn’t just a church it was a beacon a haven for a growing congregation. In 1923 under Reverend H P Bragdon the church was officially named New Mount Olive Baptist Church. A small wooden structure was built in 1925 marking a significant step. The church faced adversity weathering hurricanes in 1926 and 1928. Undeterred the members rebuilt stronger than before. A permanent building was completed in 1929 its doors opening to a congregation exceeding 500.
This impressive growth continued under Reverend O W Wells who led the congregation into another era of expansion and prestige. A larger church was constructed reflecting the ever-increasing membership. By 1960 the membership had swelled to approximately 1700. This was a truly remarkable accomplishment.The Missionary Society a vital part of the church’s life grew from twelve to over 112 members showcasing the church’s dedication to community outreach.
In 1962 Reverend G E Weaver took the reins overseeing further spiritual and physical growth. A new wing with eighteen classrooms and additional seating was added to the existing structure. The church then relocated to a 15 million dollar building in 1979 a monument to their collective efforts and unwavering faith. Dr Mack King Carter joined as co-pastor in 1981 serving until Reverend Weaver’s retirement in 1982. He then became Pastor Emeritus.
Under Dr Carter’s leadership the congregation flourished exceeding 10000 members. His visionary leadership extended beyond the church walls. He established a nationally and internationally broadcast television ministry. He also founded the Mount Olive Development Corporation (MODCO) a faith-based organization devoted to revitalizing low and moderate-income communities. Dr Carter a renowned theologian published four books leaving a lasting legacy on the faith community. He retired in 2009 after 27 years of devoted service. His retirement banquet aptly titled “A Page for History” celebrated his incredible contributions.
In 2009 Reverend Marcus D Davidson was elected Senior Pastor continuing the church’s legacy of growth and service. New Mount Olive Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship it’s a living testament to faith community and the power of enduring dreams. It’s a story of resilience growth and unwavering dedication to God and its community. A story that continues to unfold.
