Initially a playful pavilion. The New Guardhouse in Warsaw’s Łazienki Park began its life as Trou-Madame. Built between 1779 and 1780 this charming structure was named after a popular 18th-century game. Imagine rolling balls through intricate gates. This low single-storey building boasted Chinese-style architecture. Landscape polychromes and painted garden arbours adorned its walls.

But the New Guardhouse’s story didn’t end there. In 1782 it transformed into a court theatre. Known as the Little Theatre or the Comedy Theatre it hosted royal performances. An expansion in 1788 added a brick building next door. This housed the Royal Guard. This showcased a fascinating duality. A place of entertainment quickly became a place of military security.

However the theatre’s curtain eventually fell. By 1830 the New Guardhouse had a new role. It was redesigned as a guardhouse by architect Jakub Kubicki. This renovation reflected its new purpose. Heavy architectural forms and austere decorations replaced the playful aesthetics of the past. Military masks and bas-relief collections of armour appeared above the windows. This speaks of a transformation. From a place of amusement to a place of serious protection.

The New Guardhouse stands today as a testament to change. Its past is layered. It reflects the shifting needs and tastes of centuries. It also shows the evolution of royal patronage. From a frivolous game to military duty it has always played a role in the Łazienki Park’s story. The New Guardhouse stands as a silent observer. It has witnessed centuries of history in this beloved park. Now it silently bears witness to the countless visitors who pass by.
