Thirty-three years. That’s how long Apostle A Norris Smith has served as pastor of the New Covenant Baptist Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a cornerstone of Southeast Washington DC a place where faith and community intertwine.

The New Covenant Baptist Church stands as a testament to enduring faith. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It represents a legacy of service built by Pastor Smith himself a man who arrived in Washington DC in 1968. He began his career with the city’s Department of Public Works. He served as a safety inspector for over twenty years. But his true calling lay elsewhere.

His journey to the pulpit was a gradual one. He started as a deacon usher and choir member at Mt Zion Baptist Church. Thanksgiving night 1978 marked a turning point. He felt the call to preach. His first sermon was delivered February 11 1979. He joined Galilee Baptist Church in 1980 under Reverend Dr Eugene Weathers. There he was ordained in 1984.

March 1 1985 brought him to New Covenant Baptist Church. He became its pastor a role he’s held with unwavering devotion. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Baptist Church Bible Institute in 2002. That same year he was consecrated a bishop by Bishop Willie L Lewis Sr. In 2006 he established Refreshing Spring Ministries. This network now includes several churches across the region. His dedication expanded even further. He was consecrated an Apostle in 2012.

The church isn’t just about Apostle Smith. It’s a vibrant community. Elder Donna M Smith the First Lady and Pastor of Women has also played a vital role. She’s a pillar of strength and inspiration a dedicated teacher and preacher. The church boasts numerous deacons deaconesses trustees and ministers each contributing to its rich tapestry.
